on prayer (2)

I’ve had several people ask me lately for verses on prayer… the power of prayer, the why of prayer, etc.  I just spent a few minutes writing up a list for one of my friends and figured I’d share it here.

God works in the world through prayer… everything he does… he uses prayer… everything…
– prayer is the way you defeat the devil (Luke 22:32; James 4:7)
– Prayer is the way you get the lost saved (Luke 18:13)
– Prayer is the way you acquire wisdom (James 1:5)
– Prayer is the way a backslider gets restored (James 5:16-20)
– Prayer is how the saints get straightened (Jude 20, Matthew 26:41)
– Prayer is the way we get laborers out to the mission field (Matthew 9:38)
– Prayer is how we cure the sick (James 5:13-15)
– Prayer is how we accomplish the impossible (Mark 11:23-24)
(List ^ from Prayer the Great Adventure by David Jeremiah)

Luke 18 – persistence in prayer matters to the Lord
Matthew 7:7-11 – personal, particular, persistent prayer
Mark 1:35 — after the longest day (most recorded activity in a day) of Jesus’ life, he went to pray.
We’re commanded to pray: I Samuel 12:23, Psalm 32:6, Isaiah 56:7, Colossians 4:2
Ephesians 6:10-20 — Spiritual Armor — after naming all the armor, it immediately goes into talking about prayer… because prayer has to be behind all the rest!  Prayer is the power behind spiritual battles.
We pray for the glory of God… John 14:13
We pray so our joy may be full… John 16:24
We pray to build up our own faith… Jude 1:20
We pray to further the gospel… 2 Thes. 3:1, Eph. 6:19, Col. 4:3

And there’s a lot more where that came from!  Gosh I love God’s word!!!
